AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS
EXPLORE THE FUNDAMENTALS AND HISTORY OF BALLET WITH US
Since the 1950s, SF Ballet has been on the forefront of offering Adult Education programming. As SF Ballet has continued to expand, grow, and shift, so have the Audience Engagement Programs that are offered. From classes and lectures to social events and pre- and post-performance talks, our Programs seek to explore the fundamentals and history of ballet, while broadening the lens of looking at ballet and dance in general. Many Programs offer the opportunity for guests to hear from the artists who are creating ballet today, scholars that look at ballet past, present, and future, and the people behind the scenes who are helping keep this art form going.
MEET THE ARTIST INTERVIEWS
The pre-performance MTAs spotlight a work to be performed that afternoon/evening. These informative talks feature artists and choreographers in conversation with a moderator and take place inside the War Memorial Opera House before Friday evening and Sunday matinee performances during the Season.
POINTES OF VIEW SERIES
Delve deeper into each Season 2023 Program through this online series on our Facebook and YouTube channels, featuring artists of the Company and visiting choreographers and scholars.
These seminars give a foundation in the history and practices of the art form of ballet to better appreciate and enjoy SF Ballet. Learn about ballet technique by taking a beginning barre. Hear current and former Company dancers reflect on their experiences on and off stage.
SF Ballet is known for its simultaneous proficiency in the classics and innovative new work. Become an expert yourself during these intensive 2-hour classes that bring you deeper into the histories and interpretations of a selected work and let you hear from the dancers and artists themselves.
OPERA HOUSE TOUR
Go behind the scenes on this special once-a-year tour of the War Memorial Opera House. You will learn about the unique technical and structural elements of this 1932 Beaux-Arts theater, as well as discover its quirky secrets backstage.
SF Ballet’s Visiting Scholar program invites an established scholar to participate in our Audience Engagement Programs during the season to bring innovative scholarship on ballet to SF Ballet’s audiences, students, and staff. The Scholar-in-Residence program provides one scholar or advanced student per year a monetary grant to encourage scholarship that examines SF Ballet’s history, repertory, and artists. The program is intended for the purpose of research leading to a publishable book or article.
