Creating “Dance of Dreams”

An Introduction with Helgi Tomasson and Benjamin Millepied

Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson and “Dance of Dreams” director Benjamin Millepied discuss the creation of this new dance film, from bringing together (remotely) four choreographers and six dancers, to choosing music (recorded by San Francisco Ballet Orchestra) with a San Francisco connection and showcasing the beauty and drama of the city that has both shaped and supported SF Ballet.

This new dance film by Benjamin Millepied features choreography by Justin Peck, Dwight Rhoden, Janie Taylor, and Christopher Wheeldon, all of whom graciously contributed their time and choreography gratis to the project. Set to Bernard Herrmann’s music from Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (recorded by SF Ballet Orchestra musicians), the film offers a glimpse of the Bay Area in a rare moment of stillness, five months into shelter-in-place restrictions. “Dance of Dreams” features SF Ballet dancers Joseph Walsh, Ellen Rose Hummel, Daniel Deivison-Oliveira, Frances Chung, Madison Keesler, and Benjamin Freemantle. It was filmed on location at Golden Gate National Recreation Area, San Francisco Art Institute, and the Palace of Fine Arts.
